Solo Violin selections shall be chosen from the Sunshine Coast
Festival of the Performing Arts Official Selection List, or
the current Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus except where indicated. The
official list and Syllabus are on reserve at at the
Gibsons or Sechelt public libraries. You
can also contact your discipline chair, the Festival President or
Vice-President.
Selections not
found on the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts Official Selection
List must have documented level of difficulty from either
the Royal Conservatory of Music, Conservatory
All other strings
instruments must choose their selections from the Royal Conservatory of Music
Syllabus.
Material from
method books may be used in Pre Grade One classes
only.
Repeat signs should not be observed with the exception of D.C.
Folk, sacred and performer’s
choice classes do not have to be from an approved list. Selections must
meet the accepted standard for suitability of style and level of difficulty.
REMEMBER: Teachers are responsible for entering selections in the
correct class. If you have any questions please contact your discipline
chair.
MEMORIZATION is desirable but not mandatory. Sonatas need not be
memorized. Competitors should be aware that an adjudicator's decision may
be influenced by memorization.
String Classes
Baroque - includes J.S.Bach, Purcell,
Telemann, Handel, Vivaldi, etc.
Classical - includes Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn,
Romantic - includes Brahms, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schubert
Canadian Composers - includes G. Coutts, J. Coulthard,
V. Archer, J. Ethridge, D. Duke
20th and 21st Century - Not Canadian
Performer’s Choice –
Folk/Modern/Popular
Composition - Any string instrument with or without accompaniment. The
composer or a performer or performer(s) of his/her choice may perform the work.
The composer, not the performer, is adjudicated.
Ensembles I –
Folk/Popular/Modern: - TWO
CONTRASTING SELECTIONS - any combination of string instruments - piano may
be included. Instruments, ages and grade levels of performers must be stated in
the entry form.
Ensembles II –
Baroque, Classical, Romantic,
etc. - TWO
CONTRASTING SELECTIONS - any combination of string instruments. Piano may
be included. Instruments, ages and grade levels of performers must be
stated in the entry form.
