Juniors - no opera or oratorios in any class.

 

Secular - standard repertoire, any language. This must not be a sacred, folk, popular tune, opera or musical theatre selection.

 

Folk Song - music of the people handed down through the ages. 

 

Light Opera/Operetta - from the period of Friml, Herbert, Romberg, Lehar, J.Strauss, Gilbert and Sullivan etc.  Must not be a medley of songs.

 

German Lieder - a selection by a recognized composer of Lieder, to be sung in German. In classes 2114 to 2117 both vocalist and pianist will be adjudicated and the assessment will be based on the joint performance. Both participants must comply with the age requirement. No professional accompanist (including music teachers) will be allowed. In classes 2123 to 2126 only the vocalist will be adjudicated.

 

MEMORIZATION is desirable but not mandatory.  Competitors should be aware that an adjudicator's decision may be influenced by memorization.  Ensemble piece need not be memorized.

 

 
Vocal Classes

 

Contemporary Ballad - Jazz, blues, popular-no amplification.

 

Musical Theatre - Choreographed, costumed. With props.

 

German Lieder - Vocalist and pianist.  Student accompanist to be adjudicated also.

 

German Lieder - Vocalist only is adjudicated.

 

Concert - TWO or more selections from ONE of the following styles: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic or Modern. One composer may be featured. Selections MUST NOT INCLUDE Opera, Oratorio, Folk Song or Popular Music.

 

Recital - THREE selections from any THREE of the following styles: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic or Modern.  Selections MUST NOT INCLUDE Opera, Oratorio, Folk Song, or Popular Music.

 

Composition - Sung by composer or performer(s) of his/her choice, with or without accompaniment. The composer, not the performer, is adjudicated. Styles as in syllabus.

 
Groups - Duets, Trios, Quartets, Quintets and Choirs.

 

Musical - Choreography and costumes encouraged.

 

Ensembles – Two CONTRASTING selections.

 

Musical Theater - Any size.  Choreography, costumes, props required.

 

School Choirs - Two CONTRASTING selections. Adjudication only.

 
Interdiscipline - Any combination of disciplines - one selection, own choice. Styles as in the syllabus - any age, or grade or any size of group.

 

Sight Singing - Adjudicator prescribed. Indicate grade on entry form.
